Campo – Bella” ……… ‘Beautiful Field’. Campobello is just that. Nestled in the Northwestern portion of Spartanburg County, Campobello is a quiet country town with gentle rolling hills surrounded by peach and apple orchards. Campobello is still close to Interstaes 26 and scenic Highway 11. The 469 residents of Campobello take great pride in their community and it’s rich history.
Early records indicate Isaiah Bowling transferred 164 acres of land in 1818 to Mr. Joseph Davis. Mr. Davis acquired an additional 150 acres of land from Abram Brock. Through the years, Mr. Davis secured additional property increasing his overall acreage and farming interests. Mr. Davis’s children, Mary Davis Dean and John Blankston Davis operated the plantation for many years before the Civil War. One day, Mary Davis Dean was riding back from Spartanburg with a large group to the plantation and upon reaching the top of Windmill Hill, stopped and exclaimed “Campo Bella” which means “beautiful field’, and so the Davis Plantation and surrounding area became known as Campobello.
Portions of Campobello were used as staging areas for the U. S Army during WWI. Tents lined Highway 11 to Gowensville where recruits learned to use their weapons and artillery on the small arms firing ranges before being sent to the front lines of war.
A home structure built in the late 1940’s on Main Street was used as the Town Hall and Police Department. Later AgriChem took over the building. In 1956 when the town organized a small volunteer fire department and used the building to store their fire truck. Since the house across the street had a telephone, emergency call were routed to the owners who would take the message to the fire bell located on their front porch.
Today there is no sign that the home was once used for a 911 emergency center.
